Big Lebowski Tee Shirts

For anyone who wants to channel his inner Dude or just show appreciation for a tremendous cult classic, a Big Lebowski tee shirt is an absolute must. And as fans of the film can attest, there are plenty of hilarious (but subtly so) shirts to choose from.

The Dude himself saw T-shirts as an essential part of his wardrobe, although his shirts tended to be plain, either white or gray, and V-neck. But the shirts that honor the Dude often call upon aspects of his look or speech to show their worship.

One of the Dude’s catch phrases, “the Dude abides,” is very commonly seen on Big Lebowski tee shirts and sweatshirts. Or, since fans know their own, a shirt may simply say “abide.” The message remains the same.

A basic Big Lebowski tee shirt will probably sport one of the film’s quotes. In addition to “the Dude abides,” these include:

• “That rug really tied the room together.”
• “I don’t roll on Shabbas.” Spoken by the observant Jewish convert Walter Sobchak.
• “Donny, you’re out of your element.” Walter’s line to pal Donny whenever Donny tries to offer an opinion.
• “This aggression will not stand.” Spoken by the Dude to the actual Big Lebowski.
• “Hey, nice marmot!” Observed by the Dude to the three nihilists who carry the critter.
• “You’re entering a world of pain.” Walter, to Little Larry Sellers.

Besides quotes, you can also get a Big Lebowski tee featuring a graphic of a character from the film. The Dude himself is the most popular, whether just his sunglass-wearing face or his whole bathrobe-wearing self. Also popular are shirts featuring Walter and bowling rival Jesus Quintana.

Another popular tee will feature anything to do with the word “achiever,” referring to the real “Big Lebowski’s” foundation’s philanthropic project: Little Lebowski Urban Achievers. Whether the tee sports the LLUA’s logo or just says “Achiever,” anyone in the know will know what you’re about. You don’t want to live a pacifist life!

There are any number of online sources for purchasing Big Lebowski tee shirts, but you might have the most fun if you do your shopping as part of a Lebowski Fest. Organized by die-hard fans, these are “celebrations of all things Lebowski” and feature such events as unlimited bowling, contests, celebrity appearances, White Russians, Sarsaparillas, Oat Sodas, a screening of the film and of course, shopping. Some of the shirts available either at a fest itself or, if you can’t make it, on their Web site at Lebowski Fest include:

• A black tee with the Dude’s face in black and white and “ABIDE” in red underneath
• A black tee with the word “ACHIEVER” in white
• Assorted shirts from each of the annual fests, one of which is a Nixon bowling shirt

You can also find a good selection of shirts at Chasing the Frog, which currently has eleven tees, an authentic bowling shirt and a copy of the Dude’s Japanese baseball jersey.

80s Tees has a selection of 19 shirts (and a talking keychain), mostly with images of the Dude’s head and an appropriate quote. They also have a White Russian tee that gives the recipe for the perfect White Russian. If you want to use it, you’ll have to trust a friend to read your chest correctly.

If you’re new to the world of Lebowski worship, you should know that fans know their own, so a simple tee, rather than one that is very obviously referencing the movie, will get you recognized as a member of the club. But don’t worry, they are a peace-loving, happily rolling clan, and welcome one and all, so wear what makes you happiest.
