Big and Tall 4 Button Suits
From LoveToKnow Men's Fashion
Back in the day when most people had their clothes tailored, a man looking for a good big and tall 4 button suit would have little trouble getting something that flattered him. The good news is that, while you can certainly still have a suit custom tailored, many designers across the cost range are making suits that fit the big and tall man. It just takes a bit of shopping to find the one that’s made for you.
Finding Big and Tall 4 Button Suits
Four button suits are more of a fashion suit, rather than a classic suit or something appropriate for business. Thus, they don’t tend to be seen so frequently. The longer jackets, which work so well on a tall man, are reminiscent of the zoot suits worn by snappy younger men in the 1940s. Many people still consider them a counter-culture statement, even though athletes often sport them.
As with any suit, you will do best to shop for it in person, where you can feel the fabric and try the suit on. However, since a good big and tall 4 button suit can be a little tricky to hunt down, you might have to try your luck shopping online. Fortunately, most online-based shops will have reasonable exchange or return policies if the suit turns out not to work as well as you’d hoped.
At Big Men, they have a reasonably priced four button suit, well-tailored in either ivory white or jet black. The long coat comes with triple-pleat, full-fashioned trousers. Since the suit is a definite fashion statement, you might go with their suggestion of matching it with a black, red or electric-blue shirt and a contrasting tie.
If you just want a four button suit jacket, and something a bit less immediately eye-catching, try shopping at King Size Direct. Their Kings’ Court Four-Button solid jacket comes in navy, black, dark khaki or gray shark. It has a single welt chest pocket, two lower flap pockets, three inside pockets, notch lapels and a center back vent.
For warmer weather wear, there is the Kings’ Court Wrinkle Resistant Linen 4 Button Suit Jacket. It features a wrinkle and stain-resistant finish, notched lapels, a welt chest pocket, two lower flap besom pockets, inside pockets and a center back vent. It can be machine-washed.
The Zoot Suit Route
Since a big and tall 4 button suit is considered a fashion statement anyway, you may as well go the whole way and get an actual zoot suit. Worn well, they make a powerful impact and are very flattering to any figure. Finding a good vintage suit can be a challenge, and the prices are often sky-high, but you can get a modern zoot suit in large at shops like Men’s USA. They have over 20 suits to choose from in varying cuts, fabrics, styles and colors. You can go the old-fashioned gangster route with pinstripes, a long watch chain and fedora. On the other hand, consider a much more modern and subtle way in cool colors. They even sell spectator shoes.
Wearing Your 4 Button Suit
Fashion mavens insist that the four button suit looks best on tall and slim men, but of course, this is all dependent upon the cut. There is no reason for a big and tall man not to wear a slick four button suit in style, so long as it’s well cut.
However, there are certain fashion “rules” that even the most iconoclastic fellow should follow. First, never ever wear the suit with all four buttons fastened. You may fasten the middle two, or even the top three, but those are your only options, besides wearing the jacket open, of course. Nevertheless, to wear it right, fasten the top three buttons and hit the event in style.
