About the Bike Company

Bike was founded in 1874 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Charles Bennett, who worked with a Chicago sporting goods business called Sharp and Smith, invented a unique accessory designed to support and protect the male genitalia during physical activity. In addition to being so functional, it was designed with comfort in mind, too. This was important because the product was intended for cyclists in particular, who sat for extended periods of time and who occasionally suffered blisters when wearing other, less effective forms of protection.

Bennett's invention became known as the jockstrap, although its official title was the Bike Jockey Strap. A logo depicting a large bicycle wheel was created to match. The invention and its success amongst cyclists in Boston (who would often ride the cobblestoned streets in the city) led to the creation of the Bike Web Company. Eventually, the company decided to market the product to a widespread audience, and the jockstrap became available to consumers in 1902, when it was displayed in what was then known as the Sears and Roebuck Catalog.

Bike Web eventually became known as the Bike Company, but its impact on the sports industry – and the world at large – continued to remain strong. Today, the company is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia and is owned by Russell Corporation. And today, its designs are more than just jockstraps! Bike is also the leader in other types of protective equipment, ranging from knee and elbow pads to gloves and shoulder pads. The company also designs pants and jerseys for various sports.

Shopping for Bike Brand Athletic Shorts

Unfortunately, it's pretty tricky to find a decent selection of shorts from Bike. The company now specializes almost solely in protective gear and apparel for athletes, so the shorts that are available are typically designed with this purpose in mind. Though it's hit or miss, it's also possible to track down specialty shorts for boxing, baseball and the like. It's just a matter of knowing where to look! Check out a few of these sites for small selections of the product:

  • Dick's Sporting Goods: Here you'll find compression shorts, which impart pressure to the abdomen, groin, hamstring and quadriceps to prevent injury and strain during workouts. They're ideal for cyclists because they provide a comfortable fit while compressing the muscles and providing support. The Ultimate Performance Shorts style is more lightweight in comparison.
  • Wrestling One: The company's Dazzle Panel Shorts are gleaming and sporty, with a relaxed fit, elastic waist and a vibrant color with contrasting white stripes down the sides.
  • We Play Sports: Known as something of a staple in the coaching world, Bike's Coaches Shorts have a smart, no-fuss appearance. They're available in a variety of colors and sizes, and are imprinted with the Bike logo on the back left pocket. Their nylon material makes them ultra comfortable, particularly when the job entails standing out on the field for hours!
  • We Play Sports: The Pinstripe Softball Shorts are ideal for a sunny day out on the field. They're available in five stripe color combinations and are made with medium-weight polyester. They are also looped for a belt, although this is not included.

Other Options

Needless to say, the selection of Bike brand athletic shorts is not particularly impressive or vast. If you find yourself searching in vain, you may consider checking out eBay for a rare find. Otherwise, turn your attention to other brands that carry similar shorts to the styles Bike once readily manufactured, including Canari (which carries a vast line of cycling shorts similar to Bike's current styles), New Balance, Reebok, Adidas, Russell Athletic, Champion, Under Armour, And 1 and Nike. Stores such as Sports Authority, REI and Dick's Sporting Goods carry generous selections of these shorts, so you're sure to find what you need.
