Bike was founded in 1874 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Charles Bennett, who worked with a Chicago sporting goods business called Sharp and Smith, invented a unique accessory designed to support and protect the male genitalia during physical activity. Eventually, the company decided to market the product to a widespread audience, and the jockstrap became available to consumers in 1902, when it was displayed in what was then known as the Sears and Roebuck Catalog.

Bike Web eventually became known as the Bike Company, but its impact on the sports industry – and the world at large – continued to remain strong. Today, the company is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia and is owned by Russell Corporation. And today, its designs are more than just jockstraps! Bike is also the leader in other types of protective equipment, ranging from knee and elbow pads to gloves and shoulder pads. The company also designs pants and jerseys for various sports.

Unfortunately, it's pretty tricky to find a decent selection of shorts from Bike. The company now specializes almost solely in protective gear and apparel for athletes, so the shorts that are available are typically designed with this purpose in mind. Though it's hit or miss, it's also possible to track down specialty shorts for boxing, baseball and the like. It's just a matter of knowing where to look! • We Play Sports: The Pinstripe Softball Shorts are ideal for a sunny day out on the field. They're available in five stripe color combinations and are made with medium-weight polyester. They are also looped for a belt, although this is not included.

Needless to say, the selection of Bike brand athletic shorts is not particularly impressive or vast. If you find yourself searching in vain, you may consider checking out eBay for a rare find. Otherwise, turn your attention to other brands that carry similar shorts to the styles Bike once readily manufactured, including Canari (which carries a vast line of cycling shorts similar to Bike's current styles), New Balance, Reebok, Adidas, Russell Athletic, Champion, Under Armour, And 1 and Nike.
