The Importance of Dress Code

Professional dress codes have become more relaxed in recent decades; however, it is still important to look presentable and put together while in the office. Those who have never learned how to dress properly for their chosen field of work can run into problems, ranging from not being taken seriously by coworkers to having an annoyed boss who doesn’t understand your lack of concern when it comes to appearance. This can all be avoided by following a proper business attire dress code description. While this code may vary depending upon region and a company’s personal preference, there are general guidelines most businesses follow.

A Standard Business Attire Dress Code Description

There are varying degrees of “business attire”, and below is a list of the most basic styles and what you can expect to find when someone gives you a particular term before an interview.

Ultra Casual

If a company alerts you their business attire requirements are ultra casual, or baseline casual, you are in luck because chances are you won’t have to even think about what to wear to work each morning. In these casual workplaces, men are able to wear jeans with button down or knit shirts, and can also enjoy shoes of the laid-back variety, including sneakers. Despite relaxed expectations, it is probably not wise to show up to an interview as if you came straight from a football game – keep it simple, but also organized and thought out until you are absolutely certain on office policy.

Standard Casual

This is what is most common in offices today, and probably your best bet for interview attire if no clarification was given. Men usually wear khaki pants and cotton shirts in plaid or stripes. Polo shirts are also a popular choice. Closed toed shoes of the loafer variety are also included in this fashion code.

Executive Casual

Men wear button down long sleeved shirts and ties in an executive casual environment. This look used to be the laid-back standard in places of business; however, it is now the norm for companies where employees regularly interact with clients or are making daily sales with their office life in plain view.

Traditional Business

A standard CEO look, men wear suits and high quality ties. Hair should be more coifed with the traditional business look, and accessories such as stainless steel watches or cuff links can add an extra boost of formality.

Boardroom

If you can even afford boardroom attire, you’ll probably be buying clothes you won’t even wear since you’ll be so busy playing golf with all the big names of corporate America. Boardroom attire includes high-quality wool suits and accessories that advertise your professional status such as gold watches and pricey ties. Ironically, the only time businesses ask you to dress for success, is after you’ve already “made it.”

Spelling Out a Plan for Employees

If you run your own company, it is important you notify your staff on what you expect in terms of office fashion. If you prefer a casual office and consider it to be a more approachable environment, express that to your employees. Many times a business attire dress code description will simply be a short “do not wear” list, designed to keep shorts and flip flops out of cubicles. Beyond that, anything goes within reason. On the other hand, if you prefer a more traditionally dressed team, you will again need to clarify, as this is becoming an endangered expectation in the working world.

Clothing speaks volumes about who a person is and where they are going in life. Do everything you can to ensure you are sending out the proper message.
