Cheap Silk Ties
From LoveToKnow Men's Fashion
You can wear cheap silk ties without worrying that they look cheap. You just need a few pointers and a few ideas of where to shop for the best.
Tips for Choosing Cheap Silk Ties
If you're shopping for cheap silk ties, you still don't want them to look cheap. Here are a few tips for finding ties that don't break the bank—but don't look as inexpensive as they are.
- Stick with simple patterns. Solid colors are usually hard to pull off when it comes to inexpensive ties, but busy patterns should have a bit of texture. Cheaper ties don't always have the texture needed to accompany a busy pattern.
- Be sure to sign up on your favorite menswear store's mailing list. You'll often find coupons with deals on ties that make them cheap even when they're normally not. Stock up when you can.
- Choose ties that are under four inches wide; 3.25 to 3.5 inches are the most contemporary widths.
- Make sure the tie doesn't twist when you hold it up by the narrow end. If it does, it will never hang correctly when you wear it, either.
- Crumple it up and see if it bounces back without wrinkles. That's the sign of good silk.
- Trust your sense of touch. If it feels like a luxury item and you can get it at a low price, it's probably a steal! If, on the other hand, it feels cheap, you should probably pass.
Shopping Online for Ties
There are a few spots online that offer great savings on ties from well-known brands (and some unknown brands, too!).
Smart Bargains
Smart Bargains has a selection of discounted ties that range from $34.99 to $89.99.
- The Joseph Abboud Printed Tie: This one is normally $79.99 but Smart Bargains has it listed for only $34.99. The pattern isn't extremely busy and it's classy enough for a suit.
- The Brioni Multicolor Striped Silk Tie: This one is a little bit more expensive than the Joseph Abboud tie listed above, but it's still only $59.97. The "Compare At" price is $170.00. There are quite a few similarly priced Brioni ties on the Smart Bargains website.
The Tie Bar
The Tie Bar has all of their handmade, one-hundred percent silk ties listed at just $15.00 or $20.00 for extra-long styles. That's a deal you can't often beat!
When you visit the site, you can shop by style (traditional or trendy), size, or color. You can also choose to look exclusively at extra-long styles. In addition, if you're looking to cut corners on your wedding attire, you can get The Tie Bar's help in choosing exactly the right tie—still for a low price. A custom or logo tie is also possible. The variety here—especially for the price—is phenomenal.
The Tie Site
The Tie Site only has eight silk tie designs available. However, they are versatile ties with colors that err on the neutral side and low-key patterns. They're only $16.95.
Boardroom Ties
Boardroom Ties is great for those who love funky patterns and splashes of color. While there are several very tasteful and understated cheap silk ties on the site, the ones that really catch the eye are the florals from Jerry Garcia and the pink stripes from Rooster. You can find ties here as low as $21.99, but you could pay as much as $28.99, depending on your taste. Here, you'll see brand names such as City of London, Jones New York, and more.
Caring for Your Silk Ties
Cheap or not, you don't want to ruin your silk ties. In most cases, dry cleaning is recommended, though some manufacturers will advise against it. You can remove spots yourself by dabbing at them with a cloth dipped in club soda or seltzer water.
When you take your tie off, don't just leave it in a ball on the sofa. Take the time to hang it up to avoid unsightly creases. To get rid of the wrinkles that come from regular wear, try an at-home steamer. You simply run it over the length of the tie, focusing on the areas prone to wrinkles.
Take care of your tie collection well and it can last you a very long time, no matter how much you paid, as long as you shop around for quality ties..
