T shirts used to be just underwear. During World War II, however, when soldiers found themselves working hard in sweltering climates, it became common to use them solely as outerwear. The clothing revolution of the 1960s saw the enormous growth of T shirts as outerwear. It even began to transition into businesses where professional attire was not only not necessary, but also actively discouraged.
