What Gore-tex Golf Rain Suits Do

Gore-tex golf rain suits are not only windproof and waterproof, but they're breathable, too. That means you'll stay dry and comfortable for the duration of your game. In some styles, there are even rain gutter cuffs to keep your hands dry. There are multiple layers involved in the creation of the fabric, though you'd almost never know it due to the ease of wear that comes with it. Gore-tex tends to be lightweight.

How They Do It

In golf suits made with Gore-tex, you'll typically get two layers—the outer layer that is usually made of nylon or polyester, and the inner, waterproof layer that is the Gore-tex lining. Even the seams are completely waterproof due to a product called Gore-seam tape.

The secret to Gore-tex is in its pores. Each pore is smaller than a droplet of water, but larger than a vapor moisture molecule. According to Gore-tex.com, the pores are roughly 20,000 times smaller than a molecule of water and 700 times larger than the molecules of moisture vapor. That means rain can't get in, but moisture vapor can escape from the inside.

The only real negative to Gore-tex golf rain suits is the price, which can be a few hundred dollars.

Caring for Your Suit

Always follow the instructions included with your Gore-tex suit, but general Gore-tex care is as follows:

  • Keep the suit clean not just for hygiene, but also to keep the pores clean so that it works as desired. Sweat and dirt will hinder the performance of the suit.
  • Tumble dry
  • Iron on a low setting
  • If you need to revive the layer designed for repelling water (the Durable Water Repellent, or DWR, breaks down over time), drying or tumble drying should work. If not, you can purchase a wash in re-proofer.
