Made to Measure Tailored Suits

From LoveToKnow Men's Fashion

Up until fairly recently in fashion history, made-to-measure tailored suits were the only thing that a fashionable man wore in public. No matter what a man’s figure might be, a good tailor can design clothes that will hide imperfections and flatter him to the fullest.

A made-to-measure suit will flatter any figure.

Basic Made-to-Measure Tailored Suits

Made-to-measure tailored suits, also called bespoke suits, have never been inexpensive. Even when the majority of men had their clothes tailor-made, the best suits could always be spotted by a discerning eye, and everyone knew this was a man of some stature. The cost is worth it, however, because such suits are designed to last. Even when styles changed more regularly, a man might simply bring his suit back to his tailor and have some changes made so that the same jacket and trousers might be worn a few more seasons and yet look as stylish as ever.

These days, bespoke suits are usually only made for special occasions, although men who know what a difference such a suit can make to their look may invest in a classic cut that will last and look good for years. Many men will opt only for a jacket, or just a simple design for the jacket and trousers, so as to get the overall effect without spending quite as much money. That’s fine, but generally speaking, if you’re going to work with a good tailor, you may as well get the best possible suit and trust that it will pay off with years of sharp dressing and compliments.

Why Bespoke?

For those who are still skeptical, pointing out that designer suits are beautifully designed, well cut and also last a long time if properly maintained, you need only watch the 2007 James Bond film Casino Royale. When Bond and Vesper are preparing to go into the casino, she presents him with a tailored suit. He protests that he already has a dinner jacket, but she insists. When he tries on the made-to-measure tailored suit, he is sold – it makes him look even sleeker and sexier than he already is.

Many men who take the plunge and order a bespoke suit for their wedding or another significant event discover that the effect is so transformative, they don’t want to wear anything off the rack again. They even opt to have their dress shirts made by tailors. You don’t have to be rich to go this route, merely practical. Even for a man who wears a suit and tie every day, you still only need a few good suits. Most men only need one, along with some really good shirts and ties and accessories. If you don’t dress up very often, when you do, you should look amazing.

Finding a Good Tailor

Once you decide you want to buy a bespoke suit, you must find a good tailor. This will be the hardest part of the process. Unfortunately, the best tailors will usually be in major metropolitan areas, so if you’re not in a big city, you may have to work with someone remotely. What you want is to get a recommendation. If you can’t get one personally, look online at sites like Yelp where people write reviews of services in a given area.

You should also be able to assess a tailor advertised online by the services offered and the way they respond to any questions. Go with what feels comfortable. They know what sort of investment you are making and are committed to making you perfectly happy with your suit.

If you have to choose a remote tailor, you might consider looking overseas. The British bespoke tailors are considered some of the best in the world and are accustomed to creating designs for overseas customers. Don’t worry that you’ll look old-fashioned – instead, you’ll look fantastic.
