About Motorcycle Vests
Leather motorcycle vests can give you that bad boy look that draws glances and stares from admirers everywhere. Black is a popular choice, though there are brown leather vests out there for men. Options include:
- Pocket placement (some inside, some outside)
- Gun concealment options

- Embossing
- Type of leather
Leather has been a major material for protecting the human body from the elements and from injury since the beginning of civilization. Different types of leather as well as processes for preserving, softening, and treating the leather have been discovered over time.
Types of Leather
Most motorcycle enthusiasts will claim that the best material for leather vests and other motorcycle apparel is cowhide, mainly because of its durability. There are four steps between the initial product and what is considered to be the best type of cowhide, full grain leather.
The first step is hair removal. From there, the leather goes through several processes.
Grain: The outer layer of skin is separated from the rest of the cowhide. It is the cheapest form.
Split: The middle part of the cowhide is separated from the skin and a polymer is added to it for strength. This is preferable to grain.
Corrected grain: The scars and imperfections are removed from the hide. Corrected grain leather is made from top grain leather. Top grain leather's top layers have been left intact, as opposed to being separated as with split grain leather.
Full grain: This is generally two millimeters thick and superior to the other options. It is soft and uniform in appearance. It hasn't been buffed, sanded, or corrected in order to remove imperfections. This is the strongest and most durable type.
Some motorcyclists prefer kangaroo leather. It is lighter weight than cowhide and offers even more protection for the skin in the case of a fall.

Caring For Your Vest
Protect your leather motorcycle vest from the elements as much as possible. When not in use, keep it out of direct sunlight. Remove stains as soon as possible with a mild soap and a microfiber cloth. Go back over the cleaned areas with a dry cloth and use leather conditioner to keep the vest soft. If you have an oil-based stain, you can remove it by sprinkling cornstarch on it and leaving it overnight. The next morning, go over the area with a damp cloth. Keep the vest flat while drying and store in cloth bags—never plastic.
Be sure that you know what kind of leather you have before attempting to clean or condition it. From there, you can find the exact products most suitable to your needs.
