Mens Cutoff Shorts

From LoveToKnow Men's Fashion

When the temperatures begin to soar, men's cutoff shorts can be a cool way to sport your favorite denim without falling prey to the mercury rising. Men's cutoff shorts are a queessential summer fashion staple that wear well for many seasons. Rugged, masculine and a bit rebellious, cutting off a favorite pair of Levi’s may be the perfect summer wardrobe fix for Coed students and suburban men alike.

Recycle, reuse, and reinvent that denim

Thrift Store Scouting

First, not all denim is worth the sacrifice. Before you take the scissors to your True Religion premium denim jeans, seek out thrift stores and resale establishments for a "cut worthy" pair of denim. No need to worry about grass stains or torn hems on that donated pair, you’ll be cutting these jeans anyway, so keep the eye above the knee level and start the search for a pair of soon to be shorts.

Denim pants are the best fabric for cutoffs. You can try your creative hand at cargo or canvas pants, but know that nothing breaks in, frays apart and unearths the same boho cool charm as a pair of denim shorts.

Measure Twice, Cut Once

Chances are, if you haven’t found your sacrificial pair of pants at a resale shop, you’ve scoured your closet and have instead decided to donate your favorite, best fitting, most comfortable pair of denim blues to the cause. Now is not the time to make a hasty cut. Remember the old rule measure twice and cut once? Practice it! You can always snip those pants to a shorter length if desired, but there is absolutely no way to add length to a pair of men's extreme short shorts.

Torn and Frayed

As you wash your cutoff shorts, you're bound to find a few loose strands tangling beneath the new hemline. Simply snip off these loose ends and let the fabric begin to fray in its own free spirited fashion.

The more you dry the shorts, the more they are likely to fray. If you need to give those ragged ends a break, consider line drying your shorts as an alternative to heat drying. To soften stiff denim, simply toss them in the dryer after they line dry for a few minutes with a dryer sheet.

How to Wear Men's Cutoff Shorts

Cutoff shorts look great when worn in a relaxed manner. Grab your true blues and pair them with a tank top and a hilarious t shirt, then take the evening chill off with an equally deconstructed hoodie, such as this style from hip designer Dragonfly.

Perfect while throwing horseshoes on the beach or four wheeling in a jeep excursion, cutoff shorts can also be worn for monotonous household chores, such as kickback car washing Saturday or lawn mowing Sunday.

The best shoes to pair with cutoff shorts are undoubtedly flip-flops, but you can kick on a pair of broken in converse or skate shoes for a covered toe option. Skip the socks when sporting cutoff shorts to keep the look balanced and casual.

When to Say Goodbye

Despite your very best efforts, some cutoff shorts just don’t make the final cut. A perfect example? Acid washed jeans, black denim, and Wranglers should be stored in the attic, where one day they may fetch you a small fortune on Ebay.

Cutoffs that are too small should be donated to your girlfriend, who will then most likely turn them into an even shorter pair of Daisy Dukes.

Most importantly, always take a good look in the mirror and make sure the cutoffs you’ve created indeed look good. If you have to ask, you probably already know the answer. Spare everyone the eye sore of a home-economic experiment gone terribly bad, and ditch those cutoffs for a great pair of men's madras shorts, which are sure to keep you looking and feeling nothing (too short) of cool.
