Office Casual Dress Code

From LoveToKnow Men's Fashion

For casual Fridays in the office or jobs that allow “business casual” clothing, finding the right office casual dress code balance can be tricky. American fashion has taken a drubbing when compared to European style. Stateside, the trend tends toward more casual rather than less. Of course, a lot of this depends on where you live and what environment you work in. Jeans have become a regular part of everyday wear for so many people that the only time they are taken off is for the office. What do men need to know about casual office dressing so that they appear professional and not sloppy?

Office Casual Meaning

Many businesses adopt casual Fridays, a day when employees are free from the suit and tie codes. Some companies have an everyday casual dress code, but finding out exactly what it entails isn’t always easy. Even if your job has a written dress code, there are sometimes unwritten rules that you’re expected to follow.

One way to ensure you don’t commit any office fashion faux pas is to look to your higher-ups. Take cues from your superiors on how to dress, even when you’re dressing down. If you never see your boss sporting denim on casual Friday, it would be smart for you not to wear jeans, either. You know those funny tee shirts featuring the beer logos and bikini-clad models? Leave them at home.

Some do’s and don’ts of office casual dress code include:

  • No jeans: Even if your peers show up in blue jeans on Friday, if you’re trying to get ahead within the company, you should steer clear. You still have options such as khakis, which are comfortable and can be dressed up or down.
  • No sneakers: Sneakers are extremely comfortable, but they shouldn’t be worn to the office.
  • No torn or dirty clothing: Showing up in torn or dirty clothing could keep your boss from taking you seriously. Part of being an adult in the work force is making sure you have clean clothing every day. Don’t get caught with a mountain of dirty laundry and only one clean pair of underwear. Laying out your clothes the night before is a smart way to make sure there are no unpleasant surprises when you’re getting ready in the morning. This is especially true if you’re in a rush.
  • No funny tee shirts: Yes, those tops with the hilarious sayings are amusing, but they’re inappropriate for casual Fridays. They have their place, which is at home or out with buddies. Save them for those occasions.
  • No shorts: Unless your job is on a golf course during the summer, stick to slacks.
  • No sweats: There’s "casual" and then there’s "office casual". The two terms do have different meanings. Sweatpants belong on the track or in the gym, never in the workplace.

Fit into Office Casual Dress Code

You can put together an office casual look that will be comfortable, cool and professional, whether it’s only for Fridays or every day. Mix and match pieces to create an individual style. Allow your casual vibe to peek through while still looking like an employee who’s glad to be there.

  • Shirt: You’ll probably be able to ditch the tie on casual Fridays, but your shirt should still have some sense of professionalism. Short-sleeved button-up shirts are fine for warmer weather while a long-sleeved top can be worn when it’s cooler. You have the option to wear a sport coat with either look.
  • Slacks: You can skip the dress slacks. Khakis that are pressed will work fine as a casual replacement.
  • Shoes: Although you might think your options are limited, men have an array of choices when it comes to office casual shoes. Sperry Top Siders and Rockport World Tour Classic shoes won’t cramp your style, but are still a cut above sneakers. Most men don’t own as many shoes as their female counterparts and choosing several colors in your style will make the most of your outfits.
  • Accessories: Don’t forget your belt and classic watch. Men should choose quality accessories that stand out and are made to last. Even on casual Fridays, the right accessories will complete your office look.
