Office Dress Codes
From LoveToKnow Men's Fashion
Keep office dress codes in mind when deciding what to wear to work. Various companies have different dress codes so be sure to know what the policy is before you step foot into the office.
Different Office Dress Codes
Each employer has his own definition of the company's dress code. Some employers even require uniforms which may not be the most fashionable attire, but at least you know what is expected as far as dress goes. Some of the most common dress codes are professional, professional casual, business casual and relaxed.
Professional
A professional dress code belongs in a formal workplace setting. A business suit and tie is required. To look professional, wear a suit in a conservative color such as:
- Grey
- Black
- Navy
A white dress shirt or one in a solid color is preferred. For a professional dress code, avoid:
- Plaids
- Prints
- Bright bold colors
Be aware of your shoes as well and wear a basic color such as black or brown. Always wear dark dress socks, not white.
A step below professional is professional casual. A bit more relaxed but still conservative, a professional casual dress code is shirt and tie with dress slacks. Often a sweater can be worn instead of a jacket. This is a very polished look and is not casual at all.
Business Casual
Business Casual is very popular right now for the workplace. It is perfect for casual Fridays or a relaxed work environment. Casual dress code is a button-down shirt that is lightweight and crisp and a nice pair of trousers such as Dockers. A polo shirt and pants are also appropriate. Keep in mind that even though it is called casual, there are some things you should not wear. Avoid shorts, sweats and jeans. Wear a nice pair of loafers, but definitely not sneakers. Always wear socks with your shoes, don't look sloppy and maintain a sense of professionalism with your attire.
Another form of casual dress is smart casual. It is relaxed, but still professional. A collared shirt, trousers and a jacket or sports coat satisfies this look.
Relaxed
More appropriate for home-based businesses or a very low-key environment, relaxed dress code can be interpreted in many ways. It is best not to take relaxed too far in the workplace. A pair of pants and polo shirt is appropriate while a baseball cap, graphic t-shirt and shorts with flip flops may be pushing it to the extreme. It is always wise to ask what not wear when the dress code is defined as relaxed.
Casual Friday
Many offices follow a casual Friday policy. You may dress professionally during the week but give your suit and tie a break on Fridays. Keep in mind that even though it is called casual Friday, you should follow the basic standards of dress and still maintain a sense of business place attire. There are many items that are inappropriate for casual Fridays. Shorts, flip flops and anything soiled or stained do not work for the workplace. Try to look pulled together and neat. Don't let your appearance get sloppy just because you see the term casual. You should still spend time on your appearance and look your best no matter how your dress code is defined.
Other Considerations
Office dress codes are dependant on your employer and their specific requirements. It is best to read your employee handbook regarding dress code policies or to ask what they require before showing up for work on your first day. If you interview beforehand, check out what others are wearing and try to follow that until you are certain of dress code requirements.
Keeping a polished appearance is always important for the workplace. Maintain a neat, groomed look and follow your company's dress code and you will not only look great but feel great as well.
