Fashion of the 1800's
A popular topper, the top hat
Men's fashion of the 1800's changed from the beginning of the century to the end.
Knee-length breeches were gradually replaced with long trousers and the loose construction of men's clothing gave way to a closer, more tailored fit. The advent of mass-produced clothing made it possible for men to have more than a handful of outfits.
There remained a rigidity to what a properly dressed gentleman wore and leisure wear was unheard of. From grainy photographs, we can get an idea of what 1800's men's fashion was like.
