It may come as something of a surprise, but the message of Straight Edge clothing for men is fairly straight forward- don't do drugs. Moreover, this clothing encourages all that wear it to make a life time commitment to avoiding not only recreational drugs, but also alcohol and tobacco.

What's especially surprising about this message, and the clothing line, is that it has punk rock roots; not necessarily a musical genre that one typically associates with walking the straight and narrow path. Or is it? Punk music, particularly hardcore punk, has been in the business of promoting individuality for a long time.

What better way to shun the masses (an intrinsic part of punk's "uniqueness") than to abstain from that which the masses routinely engage in (in this case, recreational drugs, drinking, and smoking)? The true punk spirit is one that is separate, or unique, from everyone else, and in this sense, Straight Edge clothing really taps into this mindset.

Straight Edge Clothing for men is actually a line of t-shirts and hoodies (or hooded sweatshirts). There is also a section for accessories, for example, hats, headband and the like. Here’s an overview:

• T-Shirts: When it comes to the T-shirts, one can expect to find several "loud" prints. What this means is that many of the tee's are colorful, sport large graphics and have letting more reminiscent of graffiti writing (and art) than block lettering. Several of the T-shirts also borrows form popular culture (by way of logs), and then are given their own particular "Straight Edge" spin. For example, the very popular Pepsi logo is on one of the shirts, but instead of saying "Pepsi" the familiar red, white and blue colors spell out Straight Edge: The Choice of a New Generation.

• Hoodies: The hooded sweatshirts also echoes the tee-shirts in that they sport various logos, bold print and large images of the rock n' roll variety. Several of the messages here include, Stay Sober, Poison Free, and Stay True.

• The Royal Family Line: The Royal Family line includes several T-shirts that showcase comic book-style drawings. There’s also an ode to the gaming world with a Space invaders T-shirt.

This style of clothing may be geared towards young men, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the prices are cheap. In fact, you can expect to pay anywhere from $30.00 (for a T-shirt) to over $50.00 (for a hoodie). However, there are some great deals to be had as well. For example, a Nike-styled T-shirt is just $13.00, while a grey Then. Now. Forever tee is just $10.00.

It may seem as if Straight Edge is for boys only, but several, if not all of the looks on the site can be worn by both men and women alike. In fact, the company even markets towards women with their "Girl Pack", a pink T-shirt and panty pack.

Unfortunately, that's the extent of their offerings for women, and while it's true that the company promotes a drug-free lifestyle, they've never claimed to support a pro-women’s equal rights one.

While it's true that Straight Edge clothing expertly mimics the alienation and sense of discord most young men feel at some time or another, it's worth noting what the line lacks, namely, pants. In other words, you'll find plenty of accessories and tops to wear, but you'll have to visit another clothing line to find the perfect bottoms to complete your look.

Straight Edge sports the message of a drug-free lifestyle, and because of the way that the clothing is designed, manages to remove some of the "uncool" stigma that's usually attached to that message. Has the line succeeded? Well, hard numbers are difficult to come by, but most, particularly parents, can agree that the company efforts should be applauded.
