Trendy Belts

From LoveToKnow Men's Fashion

Most men don’t think about trendy belts when they’re putting together their outfit, and that’s a shame, because belts are more than practical, they can be the accessory that ties a look together. A stylish belt will make you look hip while keeping your trousers on your hips, and what’s better than that?

The Problem With Trendy Belts

As female fashionistas have always known, being in fashion can be frustrating, because trends change quickly, so something you spent a decent amount of money on can only be worn for a season or a year at most. Of course, if you like it and it’s still in good shape, there’s no real reason not to keep wearing it, but if you care about being on the cutting edge of style, then you’ll be forced to retire it and move on to the next trend.

The good news for men is that there is a bit more flexibility, so although the mavens should definitely keep an eye on the magazines to know what’s in and what’s out, many of the investments you make today will be acceptable to wear for a little while.

The Latest in Trendy Belts

This is always changing, so if you’re really interested, you will have to keep an eye on fashion magazines and blogs. Recent trends in belts include alligator skin, thin belts, cotton belts in fun colors and camouflage or military-style belts.

When it comes to buckles, you generally want to avoid anything too big or flashy, as you run the risk of looking gaudy, unless you’re going for a real cowboy look. Smaller is better and stainless steel has a sleek modern look. You can also go for a subtler, more distressed looking metal. If you’re wearing all-black, you don’t want to draw a lot of attention straight to your midsection with a shiny trendy belt – it will take away from the slickness of your look.

The Belt You Have to Have

It will come as no surprise that some of the trendiest belts are also the most classic. Hands down, men’s favorite color trendy belts are basic black, brown and tan. Every man must have a good black belt in his wardrobe. This trend never dies. You can try a cotton belt for daywear or lightweight clothes and a good leather black belt is necessary for a black tie function, or just evening wear in general.

Shopping for Belts

If you want to stay on top of the latest styles, most of the time, you will have to hit the shops, rather than buy online. On the other hand, if you do want to shop online, go straight to the source. The official Web sites for hip designers like Tommy Hilfiger, Fossil, Diesel, Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein will always have the absolute latest cool belts on offer. When you know what you’re looking for, you can try shopping around or even checking eBay, some people do offer current stuff for lower prices. Fashion magazines and Web sites will also tell you where something you like can be found.

If you want to get a camouflage or otherwise military looking trendy belt, don’t go for something designer. Save your money and get the real thing at your local army surplus supply store. There should be one in almost every town, but you can also buy their stuff online, starting with the basic Army Surplus Store.

Keeping Up With Trends

If you’re serious about staying in fashion, be sure to cycle out your old clothes and accessories responsibly. If you’ve bought some really good stuff, donate it to consignment stores or specialized thrift shops like Out of the Closet. Plenty of guys want to look hot on a budget!
